Is Your Online Store Ready for Christmas 2021? A Pre-12.12 Seller Checklist
Why Christmas 2021 Is the Biggest Online Selling Season the Philippines Has Ever Seen
Earlier this month, Shopee sold a record 11 million items in the first five minutes of its 11.11 Big Christmas Sale — Philippine site visits spiked 5.5x in the first two hours, and one local electronics seller earned around P70 million. That was only the opening act. The 12.12 sale is still three weeks away and Christmas is a month out, so your 12.12 sale preparation window is open right now. The question we ask clients every November: if that kind of traffic hit your store tomorrow, would it hold?
This is our second Christmas under the pandemic, and it still shapes how people shop. Metro Manila eased to Alert Level 2 effective November 5 and remains there as we write: malls and dine-in are open to fully vaccinated customers at 50% capacity. But millions of Filipinos are still working from home, and most will buy gifts on a phone, at night, from a marketplace app or a Facebook Page.
You are not the only one who noticed. DTI online business-name registrations jumped from roughly 1,700 in early 2020 to more than 86,000 by December that year — 916,163 total registrations in 2020 against 637,567 in 2019. Everyone and their tita sells online now.
Most of that competition will skip the boring work. Here is the 12.12 sale preparation checklist we run with clients — five checks, two weeks.
Checklist #1: Stress-Test Your Website Before 12.12 Traffic Hits
Take Shopee's 5.5x spike as your benchmark. A store on the cheapest shared hosting plan — where your site shares one server's memory and processing power with dozens of others — falls over at the worst moment. Ask your host this week what your traffic limits are and what raising them costs. Upgrading in November is a planned expense; upgrading mid-sale is an emergency with your cart offline.
The free fixes matter too. Run your homepage and top product page through Google PageSpeed Insights and compress the photos it flags. Turn on caching — saving a ready-made copy of your page so the server does not rebuild it for every visitor. Walk through your own mobile checkout, on your phone, with your own money. Check the HTTPS padlock: a free Let's Encrypt certificate takes minutes, and a "Not secure" warning at the card field costs you the sale.
Still selling only through a Facebook Page? This is the season it starts costing real money — we walked through the upgrade path in our guide on moving from a Facebook Page to a full website. We see it every BER season: stores tuned in October and November are the ones still taking orders on sale day — that work is what our web development services are for.
Quick speed wins you can do this week
- Resize photos before uploading — a 4MB phone shot should be under 200KB.
- Install one caching plugin on your WordPress or WooCommerce store. One, not three.
- Delete unused plugins and themes. Each is code that loads, breaks, or gets hacked.
- Test on mobile data, not office WiFi — that is your customer's real connection.
Checklist #2: Payments — GCash, PayMaya, and COD Are Table Stakes Now
GCash now has more than 48 million users, up from about 20 million before the pandemic, with peaks of 12 million transactions a day and a projected P3 trillion in transaction value this year; parent company Mynt crossed a $2-billion valuation on November 2 to become the country's first double unicorn. A checkout without an e-wallet option turns away tens of millions of funded accounts.
Carry GCash and PayMaya at minimum, then add bank transfer for bigger-ticket orders: InstaPay clears in minutes, PESONet the next banking day.
Keep cash on delivery too — it is still the trust-builder for a first-time buyer who has never heard of your shop. Price it honestly: refused parcels, wrong addresses, and joke orders all get worse in December. Nudge repeat customers toward prepaid with a P50 voucher or free shipping for e-wallet payment.
Wiring this into an existing site need not be a three-month project — our ready-to-deploy digital products and e-commerce integrations get payment options live in days, not quarters.
Checklist #3: Inventory, Shipping Cutoffs, and the Christmas Courier Crunch
Pick your order cutoff dates now and publish them: "Last day to order for pre-Christmas delivery — Metro Manila: [date]. Provincial: [date]." Put it on your homepage banner, product pages, and Facebook cover. J&T Express, LBC, Ninja Van, and 2GO all get swamped every December; managing expectations now beats apologizing later.
Buffer your bestsellers and reconcile stock across your website and every marketplace shop. An 11.11-scale spike on unsynced inventory is how sellers oversell and cancel — and a canceled Christmas gift is a one-star review you will still be reading next year.
Communicate before you are asked: send tracking numbers the day you ship, and post delay notices early on Messenger, Viber, or SMS. If you process orders from home, your connection is part of your logistics chain — fixing slow home WiFi before sale week beats fixing it at midnight on 12.12.
For nearby buyers in Metro Manila and Laguna, offer same-day delivery via Lalamove or GrabExpress as a paid premium.
Checklist #4: Scam-Proof the Season — For Your Store and Your Customers
Last month the National Privacy Commission warned the public about "smishing" — scam text messages carrying malicious links that imitate legitimate sites to harvest personal data. Holiday shoppers chasing promos are the perfect target, and the easiest disguise for a scammer is a store or a courier.
Protect your customers by being predictable. Publish your official channels — web address, Page, email, phone numbers — in one place, and say plainly that you will never ask for their OTP (the one-time password a bank or e-wallet texts to confirm a transaction), password, or card PIN. Tell buyers to type your web address rather than tap links in unexpected texts.
Then protect yourself. Use a unique password for your store admin, marketplace accounts, e-wallets, and business email, and switch on two-factor authentication — 2FA, a second code on top of the password. Watch for the rush-season classic: a "buyer" who insists they overpaid and wants a refund sent to a different account. Our post on work-from-home security habits covers the fundamentals.
Checklist #5: Standing Out Among 86,000 New Online Sellers
More than 86,000 new online registrations in one pandemic year sounds like a reason to give up. It is not — most of those sellers will not do the basics well, and the basics are cheap.
- Clear product photos. Plain background, true color, one shot showing scale. Blurry photos read as risky.
- Honest stock and shipping info on every listing. "Ships in 2-3 days, Metro Manila" beats silence.
- Fast replies. Answering Messenger and Viber within the hour during sale week is an advantage.
- One gift-bundle promo timed to 12.12 and your cutoff. Bundles lift the average order and clear slow stock — design it this week, not December 11.
- Fresh social proof. Ask your 11.11 buyers now for a review or photo, then post those on your product pages.
Your Pre-Holiday Run-Through: The 5-Point Recap
